Machining

Metal stock weight calculator

Quickly estimate blank weight from diameter, length or sheet size. Useful for logistics, purchasing and preliminary material planning.

Metal stock calculator

Round bar, hex bar and sheet. Length can be entered in meters or millimeters. Density: steel 7.85, aluminum 2.7, bronze/brass 8.5 g/cm³.

Mass

📊 Mathematical basis

Stock mass is computed from volume and material density. Volume is converted to cm³, density ρ is in g/cm³, and mass m is in kilograms:

m [kg] = V [cm³] × ρ [g/cm³] / 1000

Formulas by stock type

  • Round (bar)

    D — diameter (mm), L — length in meters (if entered in mm, first Lm = Lmm / 1000), ρ — g/cm³:

    m = π × D² × L × ρ / 4000

    Inverse: L = m × 4000 / (π × D² × ρ)

  • Hex bar

    S — across flats (mm), L — length in meters (mm input is converted: / 1000):

    P = (√3 / 2) × S² × ρ / 1000   [kg/m]

    m = P × L

    Inverse: L = m / P

  • Sheet

    t — thickness (mm), w — width (mm), l — length in mm (if entered in m, first lmm = lm × 1000):

    m = t × w × l × ρ / 10⁶

    Inverse: l = m × 10⁶ / (t × w × ρ)

Equivalent for round bar: V [cm³] = π × (D/20)² × (L × 100), with D in mm and L in meters. In the calculator, length can be entered in m or mm; the value is normalized before applying the formula. The result is rounded to 4 decimal places.

Frequently asked questions

How is metal stock weight calculated?

For round bar: π × (D/2)² × L × ρ. For sheet: thickness × width × length × ρ. The calculator uses the selected material density and stock shape.

Are different material densities supported?

Yes — choose steel, stainless, aluminium, copper and other common materials. Density is applied automatically for mass calculation.

How is this different from material norming?

The weight calculator gives mass for given sizes. Material norming also picks standard stock, allowances, material utilization and batch cost.
