Hex bar material norming

Standard across-flats S sizes, single-piece saw cut or multi-part bar (S ≤ 41 mm). Above S41 only single-piece blanks — for parting-tool safety and process limits.

Calculation methodology and material consumption norming

The calculator norms hexagonal bar by the across-flats size S: it selects the nominal, the blank length per part and the batch mass, taking the cutting strategy into account.

What the algorithm accounts for

Nominal S: standard series of across-flats sizes; mass is calculated from the area of a regular hexagon.
Limit S > 41 mm: only piece-by-piece sawing is available — group bar with a parting tool is disabled for safety and process reasons.

Mathematical basis of the calculation

The mass of a hexagonal bar piece is calculated from the cross-section area by the across-flats size S and the density of steel (by default).

What does across-flats size S mean for hex bar?

S is the distance between parallel faces of hex bar. That nominal is used in stock and drawings when ordering blanks.

Why is only single-piece cutting available for S > 41 mm?

Large across-flats sizes hit parting-tool and bandsaw process and safety limits. The calculator disables multi-part bar above S41.
